A symposium was held at Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) on Aug 23 to mark the 40th anniversary of breakthroughs in new system radar technologies and honor the spirit of scientists.
The event reflected on the achievements of Liu Yongtan, a winner of the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, highlighting his lifelong dedication to the nation and scientific innovation.
Over 150 radar, electronics, aerospace, and naval engineering experts attended the meeting.
Messages of congratulations from academic societies, universities, research institutes, and enterprises paid tribute to Liu's team and expressed deep ties with HIT.
Zhang Qixiang, vice-governor of Heilongjiang province, emphasized that the provincial government regards innovation as the core driver of revitalization. He encouraged scientists to follow Liu and his peers’ example by carrying forward the spirit of scientists and educators, scaling new technological heights.
Chen Jie, Chair of the HIT Council, praised Liu's perseverance and patriotism, urging faculty and students to draw strength from his story and remain committed to breakthroughs in cutting-edge fields. President Han Jiecai described Liu as a strategic scientist and outstanding educator, calling on the university community to inherit his legacy by developing new key technologies and nurturing top talent for the nation.
Looking back on his decades of dedication, Liu Yongtan said, "I have spent my life working on new radar systems. I am grateful to have succeeded and have cultivated a group of young people with ideals, talent, and devotion." He encouraged the younger generation to pursue ambitious goals and contribute to advancing China's radar technology and scientific endeavors on the global stage.
